Cynotilapia sp. Lion are a widespread mbuna of Lake Malawi. Most locations are blue and black barred with jet-black fins. Males often develop a bright yellow color that covers at least some part of their body. The Sanga location, located on the western coast of Lake Malawi near Nkhata Bay, is a bright yellow fish with black bars. Like other Cynotilapia spp., they are aggressive for their small size compared to other mbuna. They are also active diggers and will rearrange the sand as they see fit.
